Why Does Godzilla 'Destroy' Cities? A Closer Look at the Data

The popular image of Godzilla as a city-leveling force is one of the most persistent misconceptions in kaiju discourse. The Bureau's analysis of all 7 reclassified incidents tells a different story.

Direct vs. Indirect Damage. In every documented case, the majority of structural damage attributed to Godzilla was actually caused by military countermeasures. Missiles, Maser Cannons, and depth charges fired at Godzilla missed their target and struck buildings, roads, and port infrastructure. In the San Francisco MUTO incident, 94% of property damage was caused by military ordnance. Godzilla's direct path of movement accounted for less than 6%.

Intentional Avoidance. Sonar and satellite tracking consistently show Godzilla altering his path to avoid densely populated areas. During the 2019 Ghidorah intervention, Godzilla traveled 47 additional nautical miles to engage the extraterrestrial threat in a relatively uninhabited coastal zone. This is not the behavior of a creature indifferent to human life.

Zero Civilian Casualties. In the four incidents documented in 2025 — Sydney, Rio, Pacific Trench, and Hong Kong — zero civilian casualties were attributable to Godzilla's actions. Zero. The Bureau considers this the single most important data point in the entire discussion.
